Can I put a French SIM card in an American phone?

I will be studying abroad and I would like to buy an American phone before I leave and use a French SIM card so I can call and text locally in France and Europe. If I buy an unlocked Blackberry or something similar will it work in Europe with a French SIM card?

No. different technology between U.S. and european devices. This could also cause complete disruption in service. Also with American devices these differ by the carriers and swapping sim cards would not work. Each carrier has different sim cards that can only be used with their devices.
