Nokia N900 Gets a Release Date – Nokia Qwerty Phone

Nokia have been busy in their R&D department creating the new Nokia N900, a highly advanced mobile phone that could be compared more with a laptop than a regular mobile handset.

This new device features some of the best software and hardware available on any Nokia phone and is set to rock the mobile markets very soon.

The Nokia N900 is Nokia’s most advanced in terms of specifications, and with Linux on-board looks far more capable of offering the speed and capacity to deal with the requirements of the new smartphone generation than Symbian.

So far Nokia’s internet tablets have coped with the job at hand but the price you pay is the size of the devices, the Nokia N900 addresses this problem simply by shedding the pounds, weighing in at a mere 181g with overall dimensions of 111 x 60 x 18mm the N900 is far more compact and lighter than the previous N810, the sacrifice comes in the size of the display screen which is a 3.5? touch screen.

For quick text input there is a sleek sliding Qwerty keyboard which actually looks far more useful than the current Nokia N97 model, but the real USP of the Nokia N900 is its new operating system called Maemo 5 which is by far the most powerful available on any mobile phone, add to this the substantial capacity of a 600 MHz ARM Cortex-A8 processor with 256MB of onboard RAM and you’re looking at a phone with ultimate application potential.

Maemo is powerful enough to allow multitasking alonside customisation features and the great thing is that the OS software can be updated from anywhere with over the air updates, the software supplied ‘in-box’ with the Nokia N900 includes support for web 2.0 and Flash, a Mozilla browser, Microsoft Exchange and email client, Instant Messaging and PDF reader amongst others.

Other features of the new Nokia N900 include WiFi, 32GB internal expandable memory, GPS and Ovi Maps, Geo-Tagging, a 5.0 mega pixel camera eith autofocus, dual LED flash and Carl Zeiss optics, Media Player, 3.5mm jack, TV Out and FM Transmitter.

This is the first internet tablet from Nokia which is also a fully functional mobile phone, with the power of Linux and Maemo the N900 is without doubt the highest specification device to be announced for release so far this year.

The Nokia N900 will be initially available SIM Free at £479.99, this new Nokia phone will be unlocked so that you can use your own SIM card and mobile number, the confirmed release date of the N900 is October 19th 2009, not too long we hear you say but these dates are subject to change so bookmark this page now for further updates.

Chris Brann’s Ananda Project keeps the grooves intact on Release, a sultry look into big beat layered over trip-hop loops and urban vocals cunningly similar to the Brand New Heavies. Simultaneously attractive and raw, Release connects the brisk drive of hip-hop with deep acid jazz elements. Songs such as “Breaking Down” and “In” include crisp female vocals from Caron Wheeler, while others like “Cascades of Colour” speed up the tempo for a stronger dub feel. Like Todd Terry, Chris Brann’s Ananda Project stands apart from more generic forms of house. Brann has embellished his original vision quite successfully with the Ananda Project’s Release. ~ MacKenzie Wilson, All Music GuidePerformers: Gaelle Adisson – Vocals; Justin Chapman – Vocals; Peter Daou – Keyboards; Terrance Downs – Vocals; Heather Johnson – Vocals; Kim Moore – Percussion, Vocals; Genoa Mungin – Percussion; Ed Wright – Guitar, Percussion; Ede Wright – Guitar, Percussion

Release Therapy

Release Therapy

Maybe it’s the new haircut, maybe it’s the budding acting career, or maybe it’s just the inevitable step toward maturity that an artist takes after six years of making records, because there’s definitely something on Ludacris’ fifth release for Def Jam, that makes him move away from the funnier rhymes that made him famous and toward something that’s trying to be a little more meaningful. Release Therapy, which, according to Luda, is supposed to be divided into a “release” and a “therapy” side, begins with club-friendly songs about money and getting it on (and often the two are interconnected). “End of the Night,” with Bobby Valentino, sits nicely between being a slow jam and a dancefloor track, while “Girls Gone Wild” is about everything the rapper is, wants, and can do for women, and has him spitting, “Just figured out that I’m ahead of my time/With a flow so fast I’m ahead of my rhyme/You clock is off-beat, better set it to mine” (which are about the only non-X-rated lines from the track). “Money Maker,” the album’s first single, features a bouncy hook from Pharrell (who also, with Chad Hugo, provides the beat) and, while it’s fun and catchy, is probably the first time Luda sounds like he was trying really hard to make something fun and catchy. Maybe this is to offset the rather serious nature of the second half of the record, which finds the rapper addressing depression (in “Slap,” where he sings, “I know it’s strange but my brain’s gone really insane/And I’m off the chain, sipping on a fifth of the golden grain,” and criticizes Bush and senseless violence, among other things) and the importance supporting friends in jail (“Do Your Time”). He even tackles violence against women in “Runaway Love,” which features Mary J. Blige and a pretty, melancholic beat from Polow (who most recently gave the world Fergie’s “London Bridge”), and while this is a fairly normal underground hip-hop theme, it’s nice to see a new side to Luda. However, it would also be nice to see some of the humor that made him so popular and that he’s so good at dishing out. Yes, there is “War with God,” the requisite dis track, which, despite the fact he never addresses his subject by name, is hard-hitting and sharp (though he recycles his line about tampons from “Hip Hop Quotables”), but the witty rhymes that made Chicken -N- Beer so great are in short supply. It’s understandable that Ludacris wanted to show off different parts of himself, but in doing so he didn’t have to forget about what fans already knew. ~ Marisa Brown, All Music GuidePerformers: James Czeiner – Strings; Keri Hilson – Vocals (Background); George Stanley – Vocals (Background);

A Merciful Release

A Merciful Release

$54.99

When WEA International remastered, expanded, and re-released the first three Sisters of Mercy albums in late 2006, fans received excellent upgrades with much better sound, great bonus tracks, and beautiful packaging. Behind the scenes there were finally signs that record labels were once again caring about Andrew Eldritch’s infamous goth rock band and signaling that the door was open for a new album. If it was a step forward, the three-CD box A Merciful Release, released in early 2007, is at least a half-step back, one of those seedy record company moves that sent the temperamental Eldritch into an unproductive world he shares with My Bloody Valentine and Guns N’ Roses. The remastered editions of First and Last and Always, Floodland, and Vision Thing are simply thrown into a flimsy box with nothing new added. Fans who have kept up with the reissues are cheated out of the flimsy box, which isn’t nearly as bad as being cheated out of a new album, a problem they’ve dealt with for well over a decade. Anyone who sat out the remasters need only worry about the spotty Vision Thing, which actually sounds much more powerful here since everything is much bigger sonically. Any high score A Merciful Release earns is because of their classic debut and the epic Floodland both making Vision Thing sound like a bonus disc in comparison. They’re huge, important, and authoritative when it comes to goth rock, and are given a new life by the amazing improvement in sound quality. Don’t think you’re getting the whole story, since so many of the Sisters’ great moments were on singles that aren’t included here. Still, until the definitive Sisters box is released, this is an easy way to consume two amazing albums and a third that now just misses the mark. ~ David Jeffries, All Music GuidePerformers: Maggie Reilly – Vocals (Background); Craig Adams – Bass; Tim Bricheno – Guitar; Andreas Bruh – Guitar; Andrew Eldritch – Guitar, Vocals; Wayne Hussey – Guitar; Tony James – Bass; Gary Marx – Guitar; John Frederick Perry – Guitar

This Is an EP Release

This Is an EP Release

$11.98

Released in the same era of expansive and humorous hip-hop debuts by De La Soul, Digable Planets, Gang Starr, and A Tribe Called Quest, Digital Underground’s similarly disposed first album and follow-up EP offered a party-friendly alternative to gangsta rap with a heavy dose of P-funk, jazz, and Prince’s electro-funk aesthetic. The Oakland-based crew, featuring Shock-G as alter-ego and frontman Humpty Hump, would continue to ride high with Sons of the P, but never really captured the inspired mix of their first forays into the hip-hop arena. That said, curious fans should first check out the group’s maiden Sex Packets release before diving into this six-song collection; while solid in its own right, the EP does contain two non-essential remixes of tracks off of Sex Packets. And even though new cuts like the extended funk jam “Same Song” (featuring a nasty Bernie Worrell-meets-Jimmy Smith synth-organ solo), “Nuttin Nis Funky,” “Arguin’ on the Funk,” and “Tie the Knot” are all impressive, This Is an EP Release does not expand on the sound of Sex Packets. Still, a very enjoyable selection of cuts full of top-notch rapping, samples, scratches, and elastically funky bass and beats. ~ Stephen Cook, All Music GuidePerformers: DJ Fuse – Turntables; The Horny Horns – Sampling; Fred Wesley – Sampling; Big Money Odis – Vocals; Blowfish – Vocals; Money-B – Vocals; Walter “Junie” Morrison – Vocals; The Piano-Man – Organ, Piano, Synthesizer; Kent Racker – Vocals; Raw Fusion – Vocals; Shock-G – Vocals; Philippe Wynne – Vocals

Release Yourself

Release Yourself

$12.98

After a tentative but promising 1973 debut album, Graham Central Station returned the next year with a head-spinning blend of R&B styles that realized their promise in a truly impressive fashion. Release Yourself touches on everything from gospel music to psychedelia, as the band puts forth an impressive set of songs that strike an effective balance between accessibility and complexity. This time, keyboards carry a new level of importance: songs like “G.C.S.” and “I Believe in You” flow forth on elaborate keyboard riffs layered with plenty of spacey synthesizer leads. The album’s most impressive achievements are the title track, a pulse-pounding tribute to the joys of self expression that combines churchy organ riffs and stately horns over a furiously-paced bass/clavinet rhythm, and “Tis Your Kind of Music,” a psychedelic-funk masterpiece that has Patryce “Chocolate” Banks and Graham trading sultry lead vocals over an otherworldly blend of keyboard and Mellotron riffs with a fluid bassline. Another stunner is “Today,” a funk-rock workout that starts with a slowly-woven tapestry of keyboard riffs before launching into a cosmic vocal section that underscores the group’s choral harmonies with some fiery guitar leads. Although it lacks an overtly pop-flavored classic like “Can You Handle It?” or “Your Love,” nothing on this album is less than interesting thanks to stellar arrangements and the group’s obvious love for what they do — the sunny energy that propels songs like the title track and “Got to Get Through It” is positively infectious. The result is a true gem that is a treat for funk fanatics and a required listen for anyone with a serious interest in Graham Central Station. ~ Donald A. Guarisco, All Music GuidePerformers: Patryce Banks – Box, Drums, Harmony Vocals, Tambourine, Vocal Harmony, Vocals, Vocals (Background); Larry Graham – Arp, Bass, Drums, Guitar, Mellotron, Multi Instruments, Synthesizer, Tambourine, Vocals, Vocals (Background); Greg Adams – Horn; Gregory Adams – Horn; Emilio Castillo – Horn; Michael Gillette – Horn; Hershall Kennedy – Clavinet, Horn, Piano (Electric), Synthesizer, Tambourine, Vocals, Vocals (Background), Wind;

As Bluetooth utilizes a radio-based link, it does not require a line-of-sight connection in order to communicate with devices… something needed when using an Infra-red connection (IrDA).
